The 1800s was a very prosperous century for Valparaiso. The most beautiful architecture in the city is from that era. Amazingly, some structures survive earthquake after earthquake without collapsing. I will be writing more posts about Valparaiso in the near future so stay tuned. The era that your grandfather lived in Valparaiso was interesting as it was a multicultural haven. Many foreign influences from that period are still evident today.
