Yes, you're right about the service. You have to line up, place an order and then stand around and wait for your name to be called out. Very different to how some of the stylish cafes in Canberra serve you. The funny thing is that coffee at these trendier and friendlier places still cost $3.50 for a cup and they don't mind if you sit there for half an hour not consuming anything else.

I actually enjoy some of the small chat I have with the waiters at my favourite cafe. It makes you feel like a welcomed and valued customer. And the cafes often make more money than I originally plan to spend by simply asking if I want another cup as they walk around the tables.

Haha, totally agree man! Starbucks was successful overseas cause they made coffee palatable to people who didn't usually drink it. But they did that by serving buckets of warm milk with sugar and flavoured syrups and one granule of coffee at the bottom. Bring that to Australia and most people are used to good coffee (and the bogans who like those sugary milkshake style coffees already had gloria jeans and other chains to turn to), so it was harder for Starbucks. Also their service style makes you feel like you're part of a factory assembly line, whereas here there are lots of nice cafes with table service for the same price. I think they did actually try to change a little for the Australian market - I noticed the smallest size at Starbucks in the US is even bigger than the small size here. And weaker and more milky.
There's still about four Starbucks left in Melbourne and it's amazing you'll never see a local in there, only tourists from America and Asia.
