The internet community

I believe there is only one internet community the same way there is one world we are all a part of. Since my earliest experiences on the internet I have been using the help of other online users to solve IT related issues.

In the last few months I have learned things that I had previously not given much attention to. Just to share some examples, I have learned about: Continue reading

New Blog Layout

I’ve changed the theme of this blog to try something new. When it comes to trying different themes on wordpress it’s hard to be completely satisfied but I think this comes pretty close.

The paragraph spacing is easier to read and the side menu looks neat. It seems I have lost my guestbook comments but I think I’ll live.

I hope you like this new look. A post about Valparaiso coming soon.

Micro-Blogging

http://identi.ca

When it comes to microblogging, a few services come to mind. These include; Twitter, Pownce, Jaiku and even Plurk. After doing a brief study of microblogging providers, identi.ca became my choice.

Identi.ca was launched in July 2008 and it has a similar interface to twitter. The reason I chose Identi.ca over twitter was primarily because the nick I was after was taken and it looked like a solid alternative. One aspect that appealed to me was that it runs on an opensource platform. Continue reading

Web 2.0 and social networking

With so much internet activity in the last two years, it is easy to fall behind on new trends with regards to social networking and new online exchanges.

I remember going through some of the hype when I was at school when hotmail started to gain popularity. It wasn’t long before instant messaging – icq, msn, yahoo chat rooms – started taking up all the free time of highschool students, not to mention mobile phones and text messaging.

I was in the loop from the beginning but somewhere along the tack I fell out of the loop and now as an adult I have to discover the new fads on my own.

I think that the emergence of facebook has been a real turning point in the way we create meaningful networks on the internet. Continue reading

How to create a blog in a few easy steps

This is how I did it by the way.

1. Decide on a url address that you would like to have and register that name with a domain host. This will cost money.

2. You then have to purchase hosting space for that domain name, this can be done with the same organisation where the domain was registered or another organisation that appeals to you. Make sure your hosting contract includes access to a MySQL database.

3. You can download blog software for free from various sites.

4. Upload the software to the server where your website sits.

5. Familiarise yourself with the software and then start blogging.

There are easier and cheaper ways of creating a blog but this way you get to keep the website address that you choose and customising the blog is less limited. One day if you would like something more complete, you can delete the blog and put a fully functional website in its place.

Good luck.
